A Territory to Discover
Barra Grande is a quiet fishing village located on the Maraú Peninsula in the south of Bahia.Located in Camamu Bay, which is considered one of the most beautiful in Brazil, its waters are calm and crystal clear, while the golden beaches are perfect for a relaxing stroll.
It is one of the few places in Brazil where you can watch the sunset over the ocean, bathed in orange light.
Barra Grande is still off the beaten track, allowing visitors to experience authentic village life surrounded by nature.
Barra Grande offers visitors the chance to experience typical Brazilian village life, but with all the necessary amenities for a pleasant stay.
As you walk through the village streets, you will be greeted with warm smiles from locals. In the evening, you can enjoy the village's nightlife, which includes shopping at local craft fairs, enjoying a drink at the bars, or tasting delicious and typical dishes from Bahia, as well as excellent international cuisine.
There are also capoeira performances with percussion, live music, forró, and, often, the festive spirit takes over, with dances that continue throughout the night!
Reviews
We had a wonderful stay at Pousada Mediterraneo. The pousada is just a stone's throw from the jetty where the boats from Camamu arrive.
It is right on an amazing beach, where you can watch incredible sunsets. Our room was spacious, clean and offered a fantastic sea view.
Breakfast was the best we had in Bahia. Federica was so friendly and extremely helpful. I feel we made a new friend! We hope to go back one day.
Thanks Federica. Un abbraccio da Silvano e Lesley <3
Beautiful Pousada - Beautiful People!
Great location and attendance.
The suítes are comfy and modern.
Being just a few minutes walking from the main square and one of the best restaurant donanna is just nearby.
The ambient it is peaceful and well maintained. Not much people around or noise.
Thank you everybody!
Chic
First, let me be upfront and acknowledge I am here off season and that my entire stay will be for a month
so I have kind of gotten to know the staff so don't have a completely unbiased opinion,
but I will say that wouldn't have happened had they not all been so helpful, friendly and easy going.
I arrived in Ilhues with limited
Portuguese, but I know when I am being ripped off and the first few taxi drivers wanted R$600 and R$800 to Camamú.
I called the Pousada to both make sure I wasn't paying for an hour and a half taxi ride with no reservation and to ask if the price was reasonable.
After confirming they were indeed expecting me and that the taxi should cost R$250 to R$300 I negotiated a better fare and was on my way
to Camamú where I would then catch a speed boat to Barra Grande (ba-ha gran-je).
Very important note! There are no ATMs or banks in Barra Grande! Get cash before you get on the boat!
I arrived at the pier in Barra Grande and therein lies the title - Location! Location! Location!
The pousada was visible from the pier and not more than a 75 meter walk along the beach.
If you've never been to Barra Grande think small but in a Grande way. The roads are sand paths and the preferred transport
(after walking) is a quad or 4-wheeler. The Internet and cell service don't always work so let this be your opportunity to truly unplug!
(I swear I do not have anything to do with their tourism office - just completely charmed here). The locals still greet strangers walking
down the beach or through "town" and will go out of their way to help you.
Back to the pousada - accommodations are clean, literally 20-40 meters from the beach, have a private bathroom with good pressure and hot water,
mosquito net (very important!), fridge/stocked mini bar, deck similar to a small lanai with a hammock, and ceiling fans and air conditioning.
It's not the Marriott or Hilton by any means, but the rooms are large, clean and comfortable and the staff go out of their way to help.
In the morning they serve breakfast and there is always plenty of options and an abundance of food. It's called Mediterraneo for a
reason so expect an Italian influence and THANK GOD they make normal coffee without adding a ton of sugar to the pot! :-)
Did I mention the beach was 20-40 meters from the rooms?
Location! Location! Location! And Service, too!
Very good and friendly staff.
Its in front of the beach and the closest of the port. Awnsome area and the staff help you in every single thing.
Excellent breakfast and they also have a restaurant for dinner. The best Pousada Ever! Chers Federica e Alessandro! :)
The best ever
Located in front of the blue sea, 50m from the pier and 1-minute walk from downtown. Spacious bedrooms and bungalows, all with air conditioner,
LCD TV, wi fi, fan, refrigerator, balcony with hammock, Italian restaurant. We stayed there in the front-building closest to the sea on the second
floor in the so-called "the luxe suite". This is really a very spacious room with a big
balcony with great views on the pier and beach. The whole room is in wood with a nice wooden floor and also a big bathroom.
Everything is only a few minutes away. Next door you have some nice bars / restautant which are perfect for watching the sunset.
The restaurant serves great original italian food. We were there off-season (march) so it openend only in the weekend.
Check their website ( you can find it on Barre Grande.net) for info on the other rooms and info on Barra Grande. There
are more then 3 rooms now. During our trip in Bahia this was the best value for money pousada
we stayed in ( after Trancoso and Itacare and Salvador and Morro de Sao Paulo).
In the little town center there is a nice variety of restaurant/shops and bars.
I do not know the other pousadas there but from what i have seen i think this is one of the best in Barra Grande concerning
location / restaurant and value for money. Espacially the "the luxe suite". Very friendly staff who speaks perfect english.
Barra Grande is quite a unique place. Very relaxed and quited with beautiful beaches and just
enough bars/shops/restaurants for a perfect holiday.
Best located pousada in Barra Grande with great restaurant
